Rome and Milan subway maps for your PSP

Milano MetroRome metro
The Sony PSP is hardly a wearable object, but definately portable. In any case here are two links for the subway maps of Milano and Roma. Finally the PSP will be useful while on the move (at least if only someone dared to check it while taking the metro in Milano.)

Wearable device for balance disorders

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University’s Neurological Sciences Institute and the University of Bologna have developed a portable “Ipod-like” device that can be used to help correct balance disorders. The Scientists believe this new device, based on auditory feedback of balance, can be worn on the belt like a pager to provide regular therapy for patients with balance disorders, improving their day-to-day activities.

Intelligent clothing inspired by pine cones

A new type of ’smart’ clothing which adapts to changing temperatures to keep the wearer comfortable is being developed using nature as a guide.

The wearables will use the latest in micro technology to produce material which will let in air to cool a wearer when it is hot and shut out air when it is cold. This is similar to a system used by pine cones to open up and emit seeds.

According to the scientist behind this technology, the days when it’s difficult to dress to match the changing temperature, are over. (We’ll se about that ‘he knowingly says’)

Wearable remote control makes waves

Australian TV-viewers rejoice - now you can wave goodbye to old and complicated remote controls. This new ‘mouse’ is about to make a giant leap from computers to Australian television.

A revolutionary technology is being developed by a team of Australian researchers that will change the way people watch and use TV.

Simple hand gestures will replace button-pushing and frustratingly complicated remotes as the era of fully-interactive TV arrives.

The device clips on the hand. It has accelerometers which measure the movement and orientation of the user’s hand in various directions, and a thumb-button to lock in the command.

The Philips phototonic textile

Check out the video of phototonic textile from Philips.
The obscure invention hiding behind is fabrics that contain lighting systems and can therefore serve as displays. By integrating flexible arrays of multicolored light-emitting diodes (LEDs) into fabrics—and doing so without compromising the softness of the cloth—Philips Research claim to bring these inert objects to life. Photonic textiles open up a wide range of applications in the fields of ambient lighting, communication, and personal health care.

To meet the challenge of creating light-emitting cloth objects that retain their softness, Philips Research and textile institute have developed an interconnecting substrate made entirely of cloth. On these substrates, they have placed passive matrixes of 10 x 10 red, green and blue LED packages. The pixelated luminaries have been embedded in such everyday objects as pillows, backpacks, and floor mats, and prototype samples will be shown at the Internationale Funkauststgellung 2005 in Berling.

Wifi hotspot flower

No more staring at the LCD screen of your laptop while walking down the block to identify hotspots. (At least for the more feminine among us) Hotspot Bloom is a wearable flower that glows and changes color to indicate the signal strength of a nearby wireless network (802.11b/g). With its mobile interface, it’s supposed to allow people to immediately identify hotspots. It’s not clear if this is still a prototype, but it’s definately an excellent idea that deserves a wider audience.
