Toyota replaces keys with watches

One of the major players in the car industry, Toyota, is planning to introduce a new and innovative way to unlock the car. This handy watch will probably make use of RFID to transmit a radio signal to the car once the hand is close enough, or in other words, you reach the door handle and the car magically unlocks. Developed in cooperation with Citizen, they’ll be introduced in the coming weeks to the Japanese market. As usual the Japanese will have all the fun first…

Wearable remote control makes waves

Australian TV-viewers rejoice - now you can wave goodbye to old and complicated remote controls. This new ‘mouse’ is about to make a giant leap from computers to Australian television.
A revolutionary technology is being developed by a team of Australian researchers that will change the way people watch and use TV.
Simple hand gestures will replace button-pushing and frustratingly complicated remotes as the era of fully-interactive TV arrives.
The device clips on the hand. It has accelerometers which measure the movement and orientation of the user’s hand in various directions, and a thumb-button to lock in the command.

Control the Ipod with your motions
If you got some inspiration and free time at your hands , you can now try to make your own motion controlled Ipod
Check out the video demo.
During the cold winter months in Wisconsin, avid iPod users find difficulty in comfortably controlling their MP3 player. In order to manipulate the touch-based iPod controls or Apple’s standard remote control, pockets must be opened and gloves or mittens removed, losing precious heat to the cold. One possible solution would be to use general body motion to control the iPod as opposed to touch. This would require no dexterous tasks, only general movements.

Suunto G6 Golf Watch

I’ve never been much of a golfer, but here’s the perfect excuse to improve those swings. The new Suunto G6 enables the golfer to discover the perfect swing. After each swing, they can check their tempo, rhythm, backswing length and speed. This feedback helps identify the best shots, developing muscle memory to repeat only the good shots. After the session, the players can analyze their overall consistency. During the Game Suunto G6 simplifies scorekeeping, completely erases the need for paperwork and memorizes information such as scores and handicaps. Four different game types ensure that every golfer can enjoy Suunto G6 the fullest. During the round, the Suunto G6 constantly updates the leader and thus allows players with different handicaps to compete seriously. But do we really need this thing to tell us that we’re not exactly Tiger?

Casio watch as terrorist weapon
Kind of old news but never the less interesting: Due to the built in altimeter of some Casio watches, the Department of Homeland Security and FBI issued a warning stating that Al-Qaeda could use this technology to set off bombs at certain altitudes.
“Recent intelligence suggests al-Qaida has expressed interest in obtaining wristwatches with a hidden butane-lighter function and Casio watches with an altimeter function. Casio watches have been extensively used by al-Qaida and associated organizations as timers for improvised explosive devices. The Casio brand is likely chosen due to its worldwide availability and inexpensive price.”

LED watches

I just loved the looks of this watch - so I had to write a few words about it, allthough it’s hard to characterize this retro watch as a wearable technology.
Let’s just call it ol’ school tech wearable with amazing LEDs. According to the firm LED watch store: “The first LED digital watches were introduced in 1971 under the Pulsar brand, by 1973 they had taken the world by storm. After appearing in the James Bond Movie ‘Live and Let Die’ many more manufacturers produced LED watches until they became as recognisable as the lava lamp, millions of LED watches were sold and then with the introduction of Seiko’s LCD watch in 1979, LED almost became xtinct overnight, rarely to ever return since the 70’s. Now LED watches are a favorite with collectors and those in the know! vintage watches can now be worth 10 times their original price.” It’s going to be mine for 49 GBP…
